The History Of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care is based on the understanding of the spine and how it affects a person’s health and wellbeing. This understanding can be dated to the time of the ancient Greek philosophers, and manual manipulation has long been used to treat medical conditions. However, modern chiropractic has a much shorter history.

The First Modern Chiropractic Adjustment

Modern chiropractic has its beginnings in the late 1800’s with Daniel David Palmer. Palmer was a Canadian who had been living in the United States as a self-educated healer. He is the first person to perform modern spinal manipulation on a patient.

The patient was Harvey Lillard who worked as a janitor in Palmer’s building. He was almost deaf, but has mentioned to Palmer that his hearing loss can when he was bending over and felt something pop in his upper back. Palmer was already interested n how the spine interacted with the rest of the body and felt that the pop he felt and the hearing loss were related.

After examining Lillard’s spine, he found a problem with one of the vertebrae on which he used manual manipulation. This resulted in Lillard’s hearing being restored and is now known as the first chiropractic adjustment. Palmer soon determined that other pain and ailments could be relieved with manipulation and this led to him opening the Palmer School and Infirmary of Chiropractic in Iowa in 1898.

The Resistance Of The Medical Community

The medical community was not quick to embrace the chiropractic theories being used by Palmer. The opposition to Palmer’s chiropractic methods was so great, at one point he was indicted for practicing medicine without a proper license. He spent time in prison for the offense and his methods was not officially recognized for many years.

Research into the theories which Palmer had, found that he was not the fraud that many of the medical community of the time claimed. The methods were sound as of the medical knowledge of the turn of the 20th century. However, many of these theories have not stood the test of time and do not look as good in the light of 21st-century medical knowledge.

Chiropractic Today

Chiropractic care has come a long way since the time of Daniel Palmer. It is now a recognized and licensed form of medical care in the United States and Canada along with most European countries, New Zealand and Australia. Many people turn to chiropractic care when other forms of modern medicine have not helped them or as an additional treatment to their medical conditions.

Despite the roots of the care being in North America, there are now more chiropractic educational centers outside of the continent. More research is looking into chiropractic care and the benefits that it offers. This research has shown that chiropractic care can help with pain, headaches, muscles problems and much more.

Chiropractic care has a long history, but modern techniques can be traced back to the 1800’s. This body of medicine owes much of its success to Daniel Palmer who many consider the father of modern chiropractic care.
